Still Struggling!

I just finished listening  to the book Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. I found it to be a very interesting read (or in my case- listen).I liked its blunt, straight forward message, get off your ass, read labels and trust no one. It reminded me to be more vigilant about what I put in and on my body.

What I didn’t like about it, first it was just vegan propaganda, I have nothing against vegans, Paul McCartney is one so they have to be nice people. I do have a problem with people who are not experts in the field they are writing about preaching to me like they are experts.  I don’t appreciate people who only do half the research on a subject, the part they want to believe and then  try to cram a philosophy down my throat. The authors found research that stated evidence to show that humans are herbivores. What?? We’ve been eating meat for 1.5 million years! So we’ve been eating wrong for 1.5 million years? When we started eating meat didn’t have to use all our energy gathering food and we started acting , well, human!(Diet and the evolution of the earliest human ancestors). Now I started to buy into their  we also shouldn’t drink milk rhetoric. I can see that, I know a lot of people who are lactose intolerant, it is weird that we are the only species that drink another species milk. But then I did more research and this article made things a little more clear to me. Not everyone can drink milk but being of Norwegian decent I can.

So went out to a web site that looked like the Skinny Bitch web site and found the feedback link and here is a copy of the email I tried to send:

I enjoyed listening to your book, it was a very interesting voice you used, very direct, very amusing. I did skip the parts about animal slaughter, I was driving and felt like I was going to throw up!
One part of your book does puzzle me, when you talked about vitamin B12. Earlier in the book you explained why humans should be herbivores and later you said we should take B12 because the only food you get it from is meat. So if we are herbivores why would our body need something that can’t be supplied by nature? That doesn’t make sense to me.
Also I did my own research I love a book that pushes me to do more research and if you read about food from an anthropological point of view they have good arguments on why we do need meat and why humans from European decent started drinking milk.
I will not be a vegan but I will ‘get off my ass”, “trust no one” and “read labels”
Thanks for the entertaining read and the reminder of how to be healthy.
Unfortunately the link no longer worked, I’d like to see what they have to say 6 years later.
So how does this relate to me? Well I do agree with some of the vegetarian philosophy and I do not want to contribute to factory farms that mistreat their animals so every other week I will be eating vegetarian but not vegan, after all I am a cheese addict, truly according to the reasearch I am.
